Mercy and Justice Teams

Circle of Welcome

Circle of Welcome is a team of at least 6-10 people who have committed to walk alongside a matched refugee family for 6 months to one year. Consider all that comes with moving to a brand new country and acclimating to that culture. Imagine the isolation, loneliness, and frustration that can be felt. Welcoming the stranger is done through CoW, as teams support the family by taking them to appointments, helping with activities, coaching them through barriers, and most importantly, being a loving friend.

Construction Crew

The Construction Crew is a team of individuals who want to make a difference through building, fixing, and renovating. Skill sets within the Construction Crew range from professional contractors, to hobby carpenters, to people who just like swinging a hammer and using a paintbrush. Many of the projects are done in partnership with Home Works and can include roofing, deck repair, painting, ramp builds, and general maintenance (just to name a few). Projects serve partner organizations, as well as individuals in need.

Justice League

The Justice League is made up of individuals who take wide-eyed participation seriously, and believe strongly in the call to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly. The Justice League believes that the church must serve the immediate needs of the community while also addressing the systemic issues that cause those needs to occur. Only then will true justice be remedied.

The Justice League helps to develop the missions strategy for the church and then executes that strategy by overseeing initiatives, building lasting partnerships, and inspiring the entire Emmaus community to get involved in doing good throughout the Midlands. Finally, the Justice League is committed to the hard work that comes with pursuing equity and holding the church accountable to the practices of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Landscaping Liaisons

The Landscaping Liaisons are a team of individuals who want to make a difference through mowing, edging, and pruning. This team is available to help serve partner organizations and community members in need of help when they don't have capacity or ability to take care of the yard or a bigger project. Team members are also asked to utilize their own equipment for these projects.

Litter Sweepers

The Litter Sweepers are a team of individuals who want to make a difference by taking care of the beautiful creation we call Earth. This team goes out on Old Bush River once a quarter to sweep away all of the litter in the surrounding area, and is also focused on caring for our environment long-term.

MORE Justice

MORE Justice is a growing network of faith-based congregations which are culturally, economically, racially, geographically and religiously diverse – coming together to fulfill our scriptural mandate to “do justice” and make the Central Midlands area a more just place to live for all people. Member congregations work together to empower marginalized people and act powerfully to address serious community wide problems through direct action. We seek to transform the systems that cause suffering by holding our local officials accountable for resolving these inequities and injustices.

Truckers and Movers

We would like to grow our team of movers. We are often asked to help move items for the women at Samaritan’s Well or for a refugee family, and we need people with trucks and/or muscles to help. If you are interested, reach out to Shelley Dempsey.
